Breaking Wax

TikTok, Whatnot, Fanatics Live, YouTube, Instagram, platforms all alike have endless opportunities to get lucky in what the industry has coined “Breaks”. Breaking products gives a chance for collectors to share the experience of opening up new products with others. Rather than paying $1000 for a hobby box and taking home the contents of the box, this system allows for a collector to share the risk of opening up new products with others but more than just one hobby box. It will be handfuls of hobby boxes being opened and shared by like thirty people. Each person is assigned a team will take home the cards that fall within the parameters they are assigned. Let’s put it this way, it allows collectors an opportunity to really hit a homerun without breaking the bank.

The National 2024

It is true that like anything in life addiction and not having the right balance when making decisions can be destructive. How many of us have this discipline? Well, it can be tempting I tell you. Even Topps just got twelve bucks from me, giving me a chance to win a one of one triple auto from Curry, James and Durant. I don’t really expect to win, but I do enjoy a fair gamble. Topps, the card industry, other industries, our entire society enjoys a fun and responsible gamble. It is not fair to the breakers, the honest hard-working breakers, to say that they “ruined” the hobby. In my opinion that is not true at all, they have actually opened up the door for others to be involved. The logistics behind creating a platform to buy into a spot to break is not an easy management task. And these platforms are not only for those who are paying to open the boxes, it is also a place for people to enjoy a show, it has become quite a spectator sport as well. Do you know how many times I have simply just joined channels to learn about product and see what the banter is all about. That is fun too. Once in a while I will roll the dice and see what I can get, usually I end up with not much, but I have seen people hit homeruns with very little investment. Play responsibly, enjoy the community that you pick to engage with and have fun with the hobby. Breaking is after all a show, a form of entertainment and we need to remember that when participating online, make the room a place of fun banter and enjoy the process.

And of course, we have to end this little piece by emphasizing the importance of fair play. Without this important element, the whole idea of breaking is just a scam. If there is no chance to actually hit the homerun, and collectors are just fed constant illusions of prizes at the end of endless tunnels then we have a major problem in this hobby. There are really good people out there who have created platforms for fair play, awesome communities filled with real chances to hit the cards of collector’s dreams. I have faith, that the majority of breaking out there is fair, and for those who are not playing by the rules, karma is a real thing and hopefully we can call out those who are cheating this industry. Use your common sense and keep enjoying the hobby to the fullest!
