Flooding the Market - leaves opportunity for small finds
What will happen to the value of his cards moving forward?
The new release of Topps Mercury was incredible. I love to watch cards being opened live and seeing auto after auto after auto of Wembanyama being pulled was the ultimate dopamine rush. The cards looked pretty impressive too. I mean I feel like it was just a few days ago we had the big DECA PRIZM release, and that too was a rollercoaster to see everything that was opened. I ended up sniping a few choice Lillard Parallels online, a purple here and a red there. With the way the market is focused on homeruns, it leaves a lot of room for a single here and there. This is very good news for the average collector who is looking to add to their PC. I even found the prices of some of the TOPPS CHROME Lillards to be quite affordable, and I get that it is unlicensed, but it is still cool to pick up a few parallels of various sets as I continue to collect and enjoy the hobby.
But the Mercury stuff is at another level. And to be honest, I don’t collect Wemby, so it is easy for me to just sit back and watch everyone enjoying the action. I enjoy it as a spectator, and that is a part of our hobby now, it is literally becoming a show, which is great for those who don’t have a budget to buy 10k boxes of cards. But back to Wemby, I mean he is unreal what he can do. After watching Wemby get an alley oop from Chris Paul last night in a preseason game it is clear that he has a skill set we haven’t really seen before, but I usually like to collect guards more than centers. Sure, Wemby is a cool player, but just not what I collect. I think there are many other collectors out there who are feeling the same way.
If I were to describe the market right now for a collector I would use the word OVERWHELMING. Think of it this way. Regardless of our financial status, every collector has a certain amount they are spending on cards, if that money is going towards big products like DECA and MERCURY, the rest of the market is going to feel the impact, ultimately decreasing the value of some of the other cards. I have definitely seen a drop in the singles market and feel that there is a direct correlation from the release of too much product, especially super high-end products. Flawless and National Treasures are right around the corner, and that makes me wonder what that will do to the prices of DECA and MERCURY cards?
Luka was a phenom too, he still has time to get a chip, but even with that said, the ceiling is where on Wemby cards? The pockets of collectors, how deep are they?
I am very curious to see what will happen to the singles market. I feel that unless there is a massive increase of new collectors joining the hobby with pockets full of money to spend, the existing market prices will not be able to maintain or continue to go up, just too much supply and not enough demand. What do you all think?
